Calvin Shields

Calvin Shields, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home on August 13, 2026. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 11, at Coyler’s Funeral Home Chapel. A reception will follow at the Cobblestone Inn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Torrington Legion Baseball. Calvin was born on April 17, 1945, in Torrington, Wyoming to G. Russell and Mary (Ridley) Shields. He graduated from Huntley High School in 1963 and attended college at Goshen County Community College for two years before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from the University of Wyoming in January 1968. In February 1968, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country. While stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, he met Krimhild (Krimy), and they were married there on May 14, 1971. He was honorably discharged in August 1971. Wanting to return to the area where he grew up, he and Krimy moved to Goshen County, where they raised their family. He worked for Puregro for two years and later worked with his sister Christine and brother-in-law Jack before beginning a long career with Jirdon, later WESTCO. He retired in 2016 after 34 years of dedicated service. More important than any accomplishment was his devotion to his family. He was a proud supporter of his children and grandchildren and could always be counted on to attend their activities and cheer them on. Through his kindness, patience, wisdom, and quiet support, he made a positive impact on many people throughout his life. Those who knew him best considered him one of the kindest and most intelligent people they had ever known. He truly was “one in a million” and lived by the words, “Love is patient, love is kind.” He is survived by his wife, Krimhild Friea Shields; his sons, David (Rebecca) Shields and their children Chelsi (Branden) Copsey and Aspen; Daniel (Georgene) Shields and their children Jacee, Grady and Brody; his great grandchildren Cora and Callum Copsey; his sister Christine (Jack) Foland; his brothers Art (Janice) Shields & Tim (Donni) Shields; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents G. Russell & Mary (Ridley) Shields; his brother, Fred Shields; his sister Ethel Marlatt; maternal grandparents John (Rattlesnake Jack) & Phoebe (Young) Ridley, paternal grandparents John Fredrick (Fred) & Christine (Tina) Shields.
