Roger Sargent

Roger LeRoy Sargent, 69, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016. Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the First Wyoming Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Robert Smith officiating. Cremation has already taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home and friends and family may send their condolences to the family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com Roger was born March 26, 1947 in Redfield, South Dakota the son of Roger Winfield and Edna Verna (Harmening) Sargent. He grew up in Wessington, where he graduated high school in 1965. After graduating, Roger enlisted and served in the United States Navy from 1965-1969, serving two tours in Vietnam, aboard the USS Tioga County. After his service, Roger worked various jobs before starting his Railroad career with the Chicago North & Western and Union Pacific Railroads in 1970. He began working in the Roundhouse in Huron before becoming a Brakeman and a Conductor. He completed his career in South Morrill Nebraska as a Conductor and Peer Trainer, retiring in 2007 with 37 years of service. On June 3, 1973 Roger was united in marriage to Karen Lucille Shoemaker and from that union they had four children; daughter Kari and three sons, Jamie, Scott, and Brett. Roger took pride in his family and embraced them with much love and support. He enjoyed time with his twelve grandchildren, where he was committed to give and love unconditionally, share laughter, engage in conversations, and always desired to put a smile on their face through his fun loving yet silly expressions. Roger also valued and enjoyed the time he spent with his siblings, whether it was fishing trips or family gatherings. Roger touched the lives of many through his genuine giving, love, and kind heart. His life was truly enriched by those who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing him. The friendships developed throughout his life will forever be cherished. Roger is survived by his wife Karen Sargent of Emmetsburg IA; son Jamie (Julie) Sargent and children Logan and Shayla of Spencer, IA; daughter Kari (Cary) Anderson and children Kali, Jordan, and Madelyn of Cylinder, IA; son Scott (Rhonda) and children Anyssa, Julissa, Kelcie, and Keyan of Torrington, WY; and son Brett Sargent and children Skyler, Baileigh, and Jocelynn of Torrington, WY. Also, brother Larry (Rhonda) of Huron, SD; sister Sharon (Kent) of Huron, SD; and sister MaryAnn (Dean) of Wessington, SD; and sister-in-law Karen Sargent of Huron, SD. Roger is preceded in death by his father Roger Sargent of Wessington, SD; mother Edna Sargent of Wessington, SD; and brother Ronnie of Huron, SD. ; and a nephew Justin Hedge of Wessington, SD.
