Mary Jane Griggs, 88, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Goshen Care Center in Torrington, Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 10am Monday, November 29, at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Torrington with The Reverend Mary Jellison officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington. Memorials may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7pm at the funeral home. The casket will be closed at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home. Mary Jane was born January 22, 1922 in Austin, Texas the only child of Burris and Jimmie (Harrison) Harvey. Mary Jane spent her childhood and early adult years in Texas, a true southern belle. Mary Jane loved to dance and even won the South State Jitter bug contest in Texas! As a child she took piano lessons but her heart was really into dancing. She enjoyed dancing films and as she grew up in the Big Band era, she loved the song “Bugle Boy of Company B”. After high school, Mary Jane went to Texas A&I college. When World War II broke out, she wanted to be patriotic and work like everyone else so she quit school and went to work at a printing company. Navy men would come into her office to get paper and ink. In 1942, Mary Jane met and fell in love with her navy man, James (Jim) Griggs. After a whirlwind courtship, she moved to Widbey Island, Washington where Jim was stationed and they married July 2, 1945. Mary Jane lost her beloved husband on July 13, 1980. She continued to stay active in her church, traveling, playing bridge and golf. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Kim and Cindi (Rieb) Griggs of Johnstown, Colorado and Lance and Nancy (Stewart) Griggs of Torrington, Wyoming; 4 grandchildren, J.J., Amy, Megan and Dane. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant baby.
